What is Constitution Day?

 

Constitution Day or제헌절 (je-heon-jeol) is a special day in South Korea to commemorate the proclamation of Korean Constitution.

The constitution was proclaimed on July 17, 1948, to match the founding date of Joseon Dynasty in 1392. Although it is not a public day off in South Korea, many events and special activities are organized on that day.

 

When is Constitution Day 2013 in South Korea?

한글 Day is one of national commemorative days in Korea to commemorate the inventionand proclamation of native Korean language alphabet, hangul (한글), by King Sejong the Great. People in South Korea observe the holiday on October 9 while North Korean people observe it on January 15 as Chosun-gul Day.

 
Liberation Day or 광복절 is a public holiday in South Korea to commemorate Korea’s liberation from Japan’s rule. Liberation Day is also known as Victory over Japan Day and celebrated by many other countries who were once ruled by Japan. Korean people observe Liberation Day on August 15 every year.

 
추석 (Chuseok) or Korean ThanksgivingFestival, also known as Hangawi, is one of the most important festivals inKorea. It is also known as harvest festival which is held around the AutumnEquinox. People in Korea celebrate the festival as a three-day-holidaysstarting from the day before until the day after 추석 (Chuseok).

 
설날 is one of the most important holidays in South Korea. It celebrates the first day of the first month in lunar calendar; thus, the holiday is also known as Korean New Year. South Korean people also celebrate solar New Year’s Day on the 1st January in Gregorian calendar, yet 설날 is considered a more important holiday. This traditional Korean holiday lasts for 3 days every year.
